Nutrition Paper (August 2023)
The health effects of 100% fruit and vegetable juices (FVJ) are a topic of debate. While FVJ contain significant amounts of free sugars, they also contain vitamins, minerals and polyphenols and carotenoids with proven biological activities.
In this article, written by Professor Pedro Mena and his team at the Human Nutrition Unit, Department of Food and Drug, University of Parma, Parma, Italy, provides a review of the contribution of each FVJ to a health outcome. A nice summary
of the research is available in Figure 2 on page 36.

An IFU scientific review
This review was updated in 2017 by Prof. Dr. Helmut Dietrich which has evolved from the first publication in 2010 based on the evidence from new scientific papers.
The document will continue to be updated by the Nutrition working group of the Science and Technology Commission when sufficient new information becomes available.
This is the opinion of the IFU Science and Technology Commission and is intended for use by IFU members and juice industry professionals as reference to assist with their research.
